Rwanda surprises almost everyone who backpacks it. The buses leave on time, the roads are smooth, plastic bags are literally banned, and Kigali might be the cleanest capital on the continent. It's a small country, which means in ten days you can cross from the capital to the volcanoes to a lake coast that feels like an inland sea, and end in one of Africa's oldest rainforests.
Kigali: two nights to recalibrate
Start with the Kigali Genocide Memorial. It's free (donations welcome), it's devastating, and it's the context for everything else you'll see — a country that rebuilt itself within living memory. Then let the city balance the weight: specialty coffee at shops roasting some of the world's best beans for 2,000-3,000 RWF a cup, and dinner in Kimihurura where a good meal runs 8,000-15,000 RWF. Dorm beds cost 12,000-20,000 RWF (about 9-15 USD). Get around by moto-taxi — helmets provided, fares 500-2,000 RWF, agree the price first or use the Yego app.
Musanze and the volcanoes
Comfortable buses (Volcano Express, Ritco) run from Nyabugogo terminal to Musanze in about 2 hours for 2,500-3,500 RWF, climbing through terraced hills the whole way. Musanze is the base for Volcanoes National Park, and here's the honest budget talk: a mountain gorilla permit costs 1,500 USD. Nobody spends it lightly, and many travelers who do call it the best money of their lives — an hour sitting meters from a silverback whose hands look unsettlingly like your grandfather's. The backpacker alternatives are real, though: golden monkey tracking runs about 100 USD, the hike to Dian Fossey's grave about 75 USD, and a day hike up Mount Bisoke's crater lake about 75 USD plus a guide share. Around town, the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo make a stunning free-ish day by moto and dugout canoe.
Down to Lake Kivu at Rubavu
An hour's bus ride west (1,500-2,000 RWF) drops you at Rubavu (Gisenyi) on Lake Kivu, right against the DR Congo border, with the glow of Nyiragongo volcano sometimes visible on the night sky across the water. The waterfront has genuine sandy beaches and no crocs, no hippos and no bilharzia — Kivu's depth and chemistry keep them out — so you can actually swim. Cheap guesthouses run 15,000-25,000 RWF. Try grilled sambaza, the finger-length lake fish, with a cold Primus for under 5,000 RWF.
The boat down the lake
This is the stretch that makes the route. A public ferry and smaller speedboats connect Rubavu to Karongi (Kibuye); the modern ferry costs around 5,000-10,000 RWF and takes a few hours, weaving past terraced peninsulas and island chapels. Karongi is the prettiest town on the Rwandan shore — hills folding straight into water — and worth two slow nights. Paddle a kayak out at dusk to hear the singing fishermen: crews on triple-hulled boats row out each evening chanting in rhythm, and the sound carries across the water long after their lamps become specks. Boat onward (or bus, if the sailing schedule fights you) to Rusizi/Kamembe at the lake's southern end.
Nyungwe Forest
From Kamembe it's a short taxi or moto ride up to Gisakura and the edge of Nyungwe National Park — high-canopy rainforest that's been growing since before the last ice age. Chimpanzee tracking costs about 250 USD; the canopy walkway, a 70-meter-high suspension bridge above the treetops, is the budget pick at around 60-70 USD including the guided walk, with colobus monkeys crashing through the branches below your feet. Park fees sting compared to Rwandan street prices, but this is where the country puts its conservation money, and it shows.
Practical notes
From Nyungwe, buses run back to Kigali in 5-6 hours (about 5,000-7,000 RWF) along one of the most scenic roads in East Africa. Dry seasons — June to September and December to February — are best for trekking. Budget 30-50 USD a day on the ground, then add whatever primate permits your card can survive. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival (50 USD, or the East Africa joint visa at 100 USD if you're combining with Kenya and Uganda). Carry cash outside Kigali; MTN mobile money works nearly everywhere if you register a local SIM.
